So, over the past couple of days I've added a bright contrasting background, plus started on their lovely faces. I always start with the eyes, then it soon appears to come to life. I've got some of the base layers down and will add more details.

Then today I've just added the first base layers of colour to Benji's body. Just shapes at the moment, details to be added later. But the body won't be as detailed as I want the faces to be the focus, to capture the viewer first. Its the face and eyes in particular that hold the expressions of the dogs; it is the main focus, not the body.

Hopefully I'll get a couple more hours done tomorrow...

Today I'll be starting a new portrait of two gorgeous dogs, Benji (on the left), and Otis. The reference picture actually started from two seperate photos that I put together for the composition.

First step is to grid the image - laying a grid over a copy of the photo to then  transfer onto my painting surface. This ensures that the proportions are correct, and it also saves a bit of time.

Then, Ill start with a base layer of pastel before building up the layers to give the depth of fur. My aim is to capture the personality (and cheekiness) of the dogs.
